Bottoms Plot

PJ and Josie are two best friends at Rockbridge Falls High School. They both like girls and have never had sex. Josie has a crush on Isabel, a popular cheerleader, while PJ is interested in Brittany, Isabel’s best friend and fellow cheerleader. One day, they see Isabel and her boyfriend Jeff, who is the quarterback of the school’s football team, arguing at the state fair. Isabel gets into PJ and Josie’s car, and they accidentally bump Jeff’s kneecaps. Jeff pretends to be seriously injured and falls to the ground.
When school started, rumors spread that PJ and Josie were in trouble with the law over the summer and that they had physically fought Jeff. The principal threatens to expel them, but Josie lies and says they are practicing for a feminist self-defense club. PJ and Josie decided to start the self-defense club, not only for empowerment but also to attract girls. They ask Mr. G, a teacher going through a divorce, to be their advisor.

The club becomes closer as they practice chaotic and violent techniques, while PJ and Josie continue to lie about their summer activities. Hazel, their friend, sees her mom having sex with Jeff and tells PJ and Josie. Josie informs Isabel, who then breaks up with Jeff in front of the whole school. The club plans to vandalize Jeff’s house, but Hazel accidentally builds a bomb that destroys his car. The club is on the verge of falling apart, and PJ and Hazel have a fight where PJ humiliates Hazel for being a loner.
Josie invites Isabel to her room, and they have sex. Meanwhile, Brittany invites PJ to her room, but when PJ kisses her, Brittany says she is straight. At a pep rally, Tim, another football player, challenges Hazel to a fight with a wrestler, and she is severely injured. Tim then exposes the truth about PJ and Josie’s “fight club,” which leads to their public humiliation. PJ and Josie have a fight, and they are shunned by the rest of the school.
Josie seeks advice from Rhodes, her childhood babysitter, who reveals that Huntington High School plans to kill a Rockbridge football player at the upcoming game. PJ and Josie reconcile and make amends with Hazel and the other girls in the club, but they are unable to convince Isabel and Brittany to join them. They discover that Huntington High has rigged the football field’s sprinkler system with barrels of pineapple juice, which would cause a deadly allergic reaction for Jeff.
After a failed bomb attempt, PJ and Hazel distract everyone by publicly making out. When Huntington High’s team arrives, Isabel and Brittany rejoin the club, and a brutal fight breaks out between the players and the fight club. The girls kill many of the opposing team members and knock out the rest, resulting in Rockbridge’s victory by forfeit. Josie and Isabel share a kiss, but the celebration is interrupted by the explosion of the tree bomb.
